AI maturity scan: see in 3.5 minutes where your organisation stands with AI

The AI scan is a free questionnaire of 13 questions for directors and managers in SMEs and mid-sized companies. You answer them in about 3.5 minutes, no account needed. You see right away which of the five phases of the AI ladder your organisation is in, where the biggest opportunity lies and which step logically follows.

What the scan measures

The scan measures six dimensions, each with two questions. Together they determine your phase. The dimension where you score lowest is your biggest opportunity.

Strategy
Whether there is an AI approach and who is responsible for it.
People
Whether your people can work with AI and how they learn about it.
Processes
Where AI sits in the daily work and whether you measure what it delivers.
Data & technology
The state of your data and tooling, and how secure and managed your AI environment is.
Responsible
Which agreements exist on safe use, privacy and the AI Act.
Autonomy
How dependent you are on the party that builds and maintains your AI, and what happens if they disappear tomorrow.

The five phases of the AI ladder

Your result is one of five phases. Each phase has a recognisable trait, a risk if you stay there and a logical next step.

PhaseWhat it looks likeRisk of staying putNext step
1. ExplorationScattered experiments, a few people using ChatGPT, no direction yet.Knowledge sits with one person and leaves when they do.Lay a shared foundation and pick one concrete process to start with.
2. OperationalAI helps with fixed, well-defined tasks. It works, but in silos.Islands that do not scale; the gains depend on individuals.Connect the scattered tasks into coherent processes and build a learning rhythm.
3. ScalingAI runs across several processes, with first agreements and measurable gains.Without a data foundation and governance it gets messy and hard to trust.Get data and governance in order and make managers owners of adoption.
4. AI-firstAI is the default starting point for all new work.Dependence on vendors and black boxes; you give up control and margin.Become self-reliant: build, assess and evolve in-house.
5. Self-learningYour systems improve themselves with every run.Standing still. Staying ahead needs continuous learning.Embed the learning culture and develop new roles.

How the ladder is built and how you move from phase to phase is covered in AI in your organization and in the article From experiment to impact: scaling AI without an AI team.

What you get

Right after the last question you see:

  • Your position on the five phases and a profile across the six dimensions.
  • Your biggest opportunity: the dimension where you score lowest, with the risk if you do nothing about it.
  • The next step that fits your phase, and one tip to start with tomorrow. For example: have a few people summarise emails with AI for a week and agree beforehand what they do and do not enter.
  • Which keynote, workshop or programme of ours fits that step.

After that you can choose:

  • The advisory report by email, with your result and the tips for your phase. If you want, three short follow-up emails come after that. Then silence.
  • Five extra questions about your sector, the size of your organisation and how much room there is to start. They sharpen the advice.
  • A 30-minute demo. We set up an example in advance with your own branding and content, so you see what your company looks like with AI. The demo is free.

The result is a first positioning. Which process you tackle first, which tool fits it and how you do that safely is something we work out together.

How it works

  1. You answer 12 questions about your organisation, two per dimension. Each question has five answers, rising from first exploration to self-learning.
  2. You pick where your team loses the most time right now, for example email and note-taking or reports and quotes. Up to two.
  3. You see your phase, your profile across the six dimensions and the next step straight away.
  4. If you want: the report by email, the five deepening questions or a demo.

All in all it takes about 3.5 minutes. You do not need an account and you can take the scan as often as you like.

Who it is for

The scan is made for directors, managers and team leads in SMEs and mid-sized companies. For organisations where AI still sits with a few people, and for organisations that have already automated several processes and want to know the next step.

You do not need technical knowledge. The questions are about how the work gets done today: who works with AI, where it sits, which agreements exist and who you depend on.

How the scan was built

The scan was developed by Stefan Frans and Anthonie Smith, founders of And AI, based on the AI programmes we run with clients in SMEs and mid-sized companies, from a first keynote to agents running in production. Three of those programmes are described in our cases.

The division into six dimensions and five phases follows the Google Cloud AI Adoption Framework, the OECD approach to AI readiness in SMEs and EU DigComp 3.0. We reduced those frameworks to twelve questions a director or manager can answer without preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI scan free?

Yes. You do not need an account and you do not have to leave an email address. Only if you want the advisory report by email do you fill in your address.

What happens to my answers?

Your answers stay in your browser. Only when you request the report by email do we send your result to us: your phase, your score per dimension and the time drains you picked, together with your name and email address. The individual answers are not sent. We use your details to send the report and, if you tick the box, the three follow-up emails. How we handle personal data is set out in our privacy policy.

How long does the scan take?

About 3.5 minutes: 13 questions, one click each. The five deepening questions afterwards are optional and take another minute.

What is the difference with the AI ROI scan?

You take the AI maturity scan yourself, online, in 3.5 minutes. You get your phase and the next step. The AI ROI scan is the first week of an automation programme: we analyse your processes and deliver a roadmap with the three best candidates to automate, including a forecast of the hours saved.

Can I take the scan with my team?

Yes. Have each member of the management team take the scan separately and compare the phases. Differences in outcome are often worth the first conversation: one person sees scattered experiments, another already sees policy.

How reliable is the result?

Twelve questions give a positioning, not an audit. The phase is usually right; the nuance is in the conversation afterwards. That is why the scan ends with a concrete next step and an offer to sharpen it together.
